On the outside, Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s honeymoon was a storybook one: They split their time between a yacht and the castle at Balmoral in the Scottish Highlands. “I remember crying my heart out on my honeymoon.” On her wedding day, she felt more like a sacrificial lamb rather than a blushing bride. ![]() ![]() Only 19 years old when she married Prince Charles, Diana became a global celebrity overnight-and, according to her, was woefully unprepared and unsupported. ![]()

![]() ![]() Is it essential to know the science if you want to paint realistically? Nope. Gurney's book shows you things you might not otherwise have paid attention to, but it also lays out the science behind how we see and make sense of things. You don't even know you're making mistakes. You let your psychological preconceptions of color and light direct you. ![]() When you're a novice, you don't really know how to look. Over the years, I've sometimes asked various teachers about certain effects of light and color in the natural world, but the response I've most often gotten is that we should simply "pay better attention and really look". ![]() ![]() Why do I come back to it? Because it’s a no nonsense treasure trove of situational, science-based information that applies to the kind of thinking and viewing and paint application an artist does. I picked this book up a number of years ago when I was painting murals, and it’s one of the very few instructional art books I’ve come back to and re-read (along with some other books I’ve reviewed, such as Zbukvic’s “ Atmosphere and Mood” or Karpinska’s “ Wet-On-Wet Watercolor Painting"). This week I’m reviewing James Gurney’s book “Color and Light- A Guide for the Realist Painter”- available on his website, as well as on Amazon. ![]() ![]() ![]() This jokey, brighter-side account will appeal to younger readers bogged down by the doom-and-gloom heaviness that can cloud the trans experience. ![]() ![]() Bird admits to suffering “cringe attacks” when reading his old diaries, and readers may similarly recoil from the occasionally overwrought prose: “Words flowed with a raw mellifluence unlike any I’d experienced before.” But Bird’s sense of humor and lightness of touch elsewhere-as when he likens the assigning of gender identity to the Sorting Hat in the Harry Potter books-help to offset such pretentiousness. Bird opens with a glossary of transgender terminology before recounting his experiences growing up in Michigan, Texas, and New Mexico having a pregnancy scare in college binding his chest (“Looking in the mirror and seeing my flat chest felt so innately right that it would flood me with a rush of endorphins”) coming out to his mother picking his male name and undergoing reconstructive chest surgery. Originally conceived as a zine, the book retains such arty touches as hand-lettered pages, small black-and-white photos, and screenshots. An unflinching and endearing memoir from LGBTQ+ advocate Jackson Bird about how. ![]() YouTuber Bird draws on “over five dozen physical journals” and “hundreds more digital diaries” in this frothy memoir of his journey as a trans man. As if all a Black populace would be interested in is Black books. Quelle surprise. As if Black books were not able to take up space in a predominantly white space. Every time I would search a book that I wanted ( The New Jim Crow, Audre Lorde’s Collected Poems, Nnedi Okorafor’s Binti, Eloquent Rage, etc.), my heart would leap with excitement upon noting that the library had the book, and do a mild decrescendo upon realizing the availability was at the library downtown.Īs I left the library fuming about the inconvenience of having to drive all the way across town to the other library, it struck me that all the books that I wanted were Black books and they were all housed in the library smack in the middle of the Black neighborhood. ![]() After spending about five minutes in the search engine, I began to notice a trend.
